As we kick off the 2018 season, the goal of your Sabrecats Board continues to be, to help bring the sport of Lacrosse to as many kids in the SW of Calgary as possible. We aim to do so in a way that inspires kids to want to keep coming back season after season.
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all our volunteers from the 2017 season. Without you, we would not be able to run such a successful organization and we can never thank you enough for your contributions.
And now onto news for the coming season!
Our registration for the 2018 Spring Box Lacrosse season opens January 1, 2018!! Please visit www.sabrecatslax.com to register and click on the Registration button on the Home page. The ALA (Alberta Lacrosse Association) has mandated that we change our registration platform from Sportzsoft to RAMP. Unfortunately, this means you will have to input all of your personal data information. If you are having any issues, please email our Executive Director, Kelly Mantei at firstname.lastname@example.org
- Novice Like Skilled Groupings
In 2017, the CDLA (Calgary District Lacrosse Association) was approved to pilot a program to create like-skilled groupings at the Novice level. The purpose of this change was to enhance and improve the experience of our novice aged players, families, and coaches by placing players into like skilled teams. The pilot program was successful based on feedback received, so, the CDLA was granted permission to continue with this program for the 2018 season.
- Junior B Tier II Boys Team
We are very pleased to announce that the Sabrecats were approved by the RMLL (Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League) to host a Junior B Tier II team for the upcoming 2018 season. This is a big step in our continuing efforts to grow the game in the SW of Calgary. If you are interested in playing for our Junior team, please register through our website at www.sabrecatslax.com.
- Girls Lacrosse Changes
The ALA has made some significant changes to the Girls Program. The changes will be implemented for the 2018 season, most notably Novice and Peewee divisions will be full contact. Previously, Novice was “equal pressure” and Peewee was “place and push”. The intent of making these changes is to keep everything streamlined going forward so there is less confusion for referees, players, and coaches.
The ALA has also mandated that every girls team MUST have 1 certified female coach on the bench. If you would like further information or clarification, please contact our Vice President of Girls Kelly Foord at email@example.com.
For the 2018 season, our Boy’s A team evaluations (at Peewee, Bantam and Midget) will take place over the weekends of Feb 24-25 and Mar 2-4, 2018. Evaluations for Novice, B and C teams at Peewee, Bantam, Midget and ALL Girls teams will take place between March 3-15, 2018. Evaluations for Mini Tyke and Tyke will be the weekend of April 6-8, 2018.
- Association Volunteer Bond
Like many minor sport associations in Calgary, we will continue with an association volunteer bond of $200 to help encourage participation at the association level. We would like to encourage all families to volunteer and make the Sabrecats a strong association; but, we understand if you are unable to find the time. As in previous years, you will still be able to opt out by paying the $200 non-volunteer fee at the time of registration. This DOES NOT mean, however, that by paying a non-volunteer fee that you do not have to help at a team level (ie scorekeeper, penalty box).
- Volunteer Opportunities
We have a few key roles in our organization that need to be filled. Most notably, a Director of Coaching and a Director of Legal. If you are interested please contact our Executive Director, Kelly Mantei at firstname.lastname@example.org.
- Association Game Shorts
Continuing for the 2018 season, you will be given a pair of shorts as part of your registration if you are a MiniTyke or Tyke player, a 1st Year Novice player (born in 2009) or a NEW player to the Sabrecats. If you are a returning player, and require a pair of shorts, you will need to order a new pair of shorts, through the registration system, at a cost of $30.
