Communication Dec 31, 2022

Happy Holidays Sabrecats! We hope your holiday season has been full of fun, family and festivities. As we kick off the 2023 season, the goal of your Sabrecats Board continues to be, to help bring the sport of Lacrosse to as many kids in SW Calgary as possible. We aim to do so in a way that inspires kids to want to keep coming back season after season.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all our volunteers from the 2022 season. Without you, we would not be able to run such a successful organization and we can never thank you enough for your contributions.

And now onto news for the coming season……

  1. Registration

Our registration for the 2023 Spring Box Lacrosse season opens January 1, 2023!!  Please visit www.sabrecatslax.com to register and click on the 2023 Registration button.

Canada Lacrosse, along with other sports in Canada, have changed the name of the various age divisions for the 2023 season.  Only the name has changed. Please make note that going forward the age groups will be the following:

  • U7 - previously 6U (for 2023, birth years 2017-2019)
  • U9 - previously 8U (for 2023, birth years 2015-2016)
  • U11 - previously 10U (for 2023, birth years 2013-2014)
  • U13 - previously 12U (for 2023, birth years 2011-2012)
  • U15 - previously 14U (for 2023, birth years 2009-2010)
  • U17 - previously 16U (for 2023, birth years 2007-2008)

As, we are all aware, the cost of pretty much everything has increased.  We have not increased fees since the 2017 season, unfortunately we are now in a position that we must increase fees.  So, for 2023, our fees will increase by $20/player.

  1. Evaluations

Tiering for 2023 has changed.  For the age groups U13, U15 and U17 there will be no C divisions - only A and B.  As a result, this has changed our evaluation process a little for the 2023 season.  For the 2023 season, we will have A team evaluations at U15 and U17 only.

How many teams we host each season, at each age level, is entirely based on registration numbers.  In the past (pre-Covid) we have been able to predict, with some degree of accuracy, the number of teams we field each season.  For the upcoming 2023 season, we are predicting that we will have either 5 or 6 teams at U13.  This age group has seen some of the most difficult numbers to predict post-Covid.  If we have 5 teams, the tiering document states that we enter 1 A team and 4 parity B teams.  If we have 6 teams, the tiering document states that we enter 2 parity A teams and 4 parity B teams.  Registration closes on March 15, 2023 - we will not know how many teams we are hosting until that date.  Simply stated, we will not know if we are hosting 2 A teams before we are set to begin A tryouts.  As a result, we will be running all U13 evaluations at the same time.  This will allow us to establish 1 or 2 (parity) A teams as required depending on our registration numbers.

The dates and times are posted on our website under the 2023 Evaluations tab.

  • A Team Tryouts will take place between Mar 4 -12, 2023.
  • Evaluations for U11, U13, and U15, U17 B teams will take place between March 11-22, 2023.
  • Evaluations for U7 and U9 will take place the beginning of April.

  1. Volunteers NEEDED for 2023
  • Casino and Roughnecks 50-50

Our casino will take place February 8-9, 2023.  These funds will help us offer the best programming possible.  You can sign up on our website under the Volunteer Information: 2023 Volunteer Sign Up Tab.  This will complete your association volunteer commitment for the 2023 season - choose Casino Volunteer when you register. If you have questions, please contact our Casino Chairperson Monica Clarkson at monaiec134@gmail.com.

Our Roughnecks game is Saturday January 14 vs San Diego.  If you can volunteer, please contact our Director of Volunteers - Amanda Taffs at volunteer@sabrecatslax.com.

  • Board Positions

We have several board positions that were not filled at our AGM in October - Secretary, Director of Development, Director of Equipment, Director of Discipline.  Descriptions of these positions are in our Policies and Procedures Manual that can be found on our website under Manuals.  The key to a successful season is volunteer engagement.  Please consider volunteering at the Board level.  If you are interested, please contact our President Greg Mundy president@sabrecatslax.com.

  • Timberfest Tournament Fundraising

Each season we host a joint tournament with the Axemen the first weekend in May.  This is a large tournament and demands significant volunteerism, from both associations, to make it successful.  Planning has already begun, and we are looking for one of our members to help work on the committee - specifically with fundraising.  Organizing the 50-50, Silent Auction, partnerships with hotels, and grab bags for the player, etc.  If you are interested, please contact our Director of Volunteers - Amanda Taffs at volunteer@sabrecatslax.com.
